↑ Pick a moment. The words show up here.
You walk up and they're already talking
“What are we talking about?”
Then actually listen for ten seconds before you add anything. Walking up and immediately talking about yourself is the only real mistake here.
Someone roasts you in front of everyone
“Thanks, I cut it myself. Blindfolded.”
Laugh first, then agree and exaggerate. Owning the joke ends it. Getting meaner back hands them the win and costs you the room.
You don't know a single person in the room
“Mind if I stand here? I don't know anybody either.”
Find the guy standing alone. You just made a friend and did him a favour at the same time. He was hoping somebody would do that.
A teacher asks you something you don't know
“I don't know — but I'll find out.”
Faking it always gets caught. That sentence gets respect from adults every single time, and it takes the fear out of being called on.
You messed up and everyone saw
“You're right. That was on me.”
Full stop. No “but.” The “but” is the part people remember. Owning it fast is the fastest way to be trusted.
Somebody compliments you
“Thanks, man.”
That's the whole line. Arguing with a compliment (“nah it's nothing”) makes it awkward for both of you and teaches people not to bother.
You want to talk to someone you like
“Wait, is this the line for the good one or the bad one?”
Ask about something in front of you both — the class, the game, the line you're in. Not a pickup line. Just a normal question from someone who isn't panicking.
The conversation dies
“Random question — what's the best thing you've watched lately?”
People love being asked for recommendations. It works on classmates, coaches, and your friend's dad. It basically never fails.
You want to leave without it being weird
“Good talking to you — catch you tomorrow.”
A clean exit makes the next hello easy. Drifting away silently is what makes it weird, not leaving.
Your friend is going through something
“That sucks. Want to talk about it, or want a distraction?”
Then do whatever he picks. Most people guess wrong and pick for him. Asking is why you become the one he calls.
Someone's getting piled on
“Alright, easy.”
Two words, calm voice, no lecture. It's the most respected sentence in any school, and everybody remembers who said it.
You're losing an argument because you're wrong
“Huh. You might be right — let me think about it.”
Almost nobody can say this. It makes you look stronger, not weaker, and it ends fights that would've run all week.
That's twelve. There are 62 in The Tiger's Manual — including the ones that are hard to admit you need.
Cool isn't sneakers, followers, or acting like you don't care. Cool is being smart, being kind, and being able to do stuff.
Only say good things about people. Talking trash isn't cool โ it's insecure, and everyone can tell.
Be useful. Fix the thing, figure out the tip, cook the food.
Make people feel good around you. That's the whole secret.
